I started the daily UI challenge in order to become a better designer in 100 days…
… or more, since it’s super hard to spare time besides work and courses. Doing my research, and creating it can take up quite an amount of time. However I prefer to learn about the obligatory elements of certain interfaces now, than in an actual project. It might look quite unprofessional to miss such elements in a serious, real-life project. Besides all that, I also enjoy that I get to publish something that is entirely my idea, and is not changed by clients.

My first task was a sign-up screen. What have I learnt from this?

In order to motivate people to sign-up, it has to be eye-catching, but asking for as few information as possible. A name and an e-mail address are usually the best you can ask for, at first. Users often use their mobile phones for signing-up, and the less information they need to type in with their phones, the more comfortable it is to sign up – therefore, they are less likely to exit your app or page, leaving you with zero information instead of a little. Don’t forget that some people might accidentally click on “sign-up” instead of “sign-in” – so make sure they have the option to navigate back, and sign in. Signing up can be made way more comfortable by letting people sign up with their G+ or FB account. Some people prefer not to link their social media accounts to various apps and webpages, but others might find it more comfortable, so why not give them the option to do so? Make sure you read up on brand guidelines for using other companies’ logos for your interfaces. There are brand assets available for Facebook, as well as specific articles about sign-in branding guidelines by Google. Another compulsory element of such an interface is a link to one of the Terms of Use, Terms of Service or Privacy Policy. Make sure to keep link colors consistent. It can affect your background choices, as well.
